This involves applying controlled force to joints in the spine to improve alignment, motion, and function. It is often associated with a 'popping' sound, similar to cracking knuckles, which is a painless release of gas from the associated synovial joint. This sound does not always occur, however the primary purpose of the adjustment is to create increased mobility and motion through the joints and this will occur with or without the popping sound.
Chiropractors use hands-on techniques, physical therapies including massage, trigger point therapy, and various muscle stretching techniques. Similarly, we may use cupping techniques to alleviate myofascial tension throughout the muscles or instrument assisted soft tissue release (IASTM) to help break down stubborn muscular adhesions.
Chiropractors often use a small mechanical devise called an Activator during treatment. This devise allows for a painless but precise, fast, low-force impulse at specific points of the spine to re-establish free movement of the joints. Similarly, the use of pelvic blocks is commonly utilised within treatment sessions. The purpose is to gently realign the pelvic bones (if deemed necessary on assessment). The goal is to reduce pain and inflammation in the sacroiliac joints and surrounding ligaments and musculature.
Sometimes acupuncture/ dry needling is used as a part of the treatment plan. These methods have been proven to work particularly well for acute and chronic pain, as well as tendinopathies such as tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), painful muscular trigger points, arthritis of the hip and knee, chronic low back pain and cervicogenic headaches.
Cupping therapy involves placing suction cups on the skin to increase blood flow to the tissue. This technique has been used for thousands of years to promote healing and relaxation. Benefits include pain relief (especially back, neck and shoulders), stress relief, detoxification, reduced inflammation and enhanced recovery for athletes.
